'Shady Business' at Data Pro
posted (January 7, 2005)

"Shady business", that's what 14 employees of a company in the Data Pro have concluded after finding themselves without a paycheck, without employment, and without anyone to give them answers. On the 4th of January employees of Mirage, an online sports gambling operation at the Burrell Boom cut-off, were told to take the 5th and the 6th off and return to work on the 7th. But when they returned to work, they found that it had been cleaned out. And it's not the work of thieves; it's the owner, a Canadian businessman who decided to just pack up and leave without telling his workers. Now the employees of Mirage are holding on to a promise that they will be paid for their last week of work and accumulated vacation pay when their boss in exile sends them money through Western Union this weekend. If it seems strange to you, to the employees it seems like a straight up "wop" and now all they can do is wait and hope that their money is indeed wired to Western Union. We note that Mirage's website is still up and taking bets.

I wish them the best.

It would not be the first time that this has happened.

I hate to say it...the odds are not good.
